Spicing Things Up!

I wanted to share a secret of how to make tasty food in a frugal kitchen. I found that you can take a little of nothing and make something taste great by learning about different spices and what they do and for what dishes. Here's one of the places I keep our spices.

Here is another. All of the spices wouldn't fit in the first spot so I keep more in this cabinet along with our oils, vinegars and flavoring. Mainly baking needs is kept in this cabinet but it's also over flow for what doesn't go into the other cabinet. I have a gallon sized bag of curry spices as well but it's currently in a Rubbermaid tub as we're re-designing our kitchen and some things are put away for now. For anyone that isn't familiar, I'd suggest learning about what different spices can do for certain meals. One spice can make all the difference!

I buy a lot of our spices and herbs from Sam's Club. They are super cheap there. I also check out sales at various grocery stores. Sometimes they are as much as 50% off. I like getting some from dollar stores as well. Mainly I check out the dollar store and Sam's first and what I can't get from them, I get at other grocery stores. One example is bay leaves. I couldn't find any at Sam's or the dollar stores, so I ended up buying a box of them from our local Publix in their brand. Last container of bay leaves I had was in Kroger brand. Both seem to be good.

This is just another tip on how I try to save money for our family. I may have a lot of spices and herbs but this has been built up over the years. I didn't blow money on all this at once!

I totally agree, spices can make a dish taste oh, so good. We have a grocery store that sells a lot in bulk. It is a lot cheaper to buy spices and seasonings there than the grocery store.

I like your cabinets with spices. You have more than I do.

Have a great day with your family.

Cheryl,

Wow, a bulk spice place! I'd fear getting in trouble there. LOL
Spices and herbs are a weakness of mine and if I hear of a good one, I am tempted to try it.
I hope you have a great day tomorrow.

Susan,

This isn't the exact store where I shop, but I do shop at WinCo in Idaho. This is someone's blog entry. I do buy most of my spices this way. We can also buy pasta, beans, nuts, chocolate chips, cocoa, flour, sugar, etc. in bulk.

To me it is worth driving the 20 minutes or so one way twice a month.

Oh WINCO! I want a Winco so badly! I can't wait to see the link. I have seen a video of this lady shopping at one and the deals are great. Yes, we are the same way with Aldi and Sam's. It's a good 20 minute ride but worth it once or even twice month. Have a great day, my friend!
